What is Supported Independent Living?
Supported Independent Living (SIL) is providing support services to a person with a disability in order to allow them to live as independently as possible in their home or in their local neighbourhood. SIL is a style of NDIS support that is used to provide support for the activities of daily living, personal care, and whatever else is needed in order to live independently. It is used to build a place where a person is allowed to live life to their potential, yet also receive whatever support that is required to allow them to live their best life.
In SIL, support to participants is offered by a team of staff that responds to needs on a need’s basis by the participant. This includes support in such aspects such as cleaning, cooking, personal care, socializing, and managing medications. SIL permits participants to enjoy a compatible level of independence in line with their capabilities, in the knowledge that support is there when it is required.
For participants requiring high or complex support, SIL services can be established to deliver just the right support 24/7. This can be in such aspects such as mobility support to managing medications to emotional support. SIL is not a question of delivering a high level of care; it’s a question of enabling independence, ensuring quality of life, and better health and wellbeing for participants.
SIL services are dynamic and individualized, that is, varied over time to adjust to changed needs. The support can also be graduated, in that participants can gain more independence as they become skilled and build up their self-confidence yet be able to access support in key areas that they require. SIL is all about enabling independence, safety, and enabling participants to live their lives to their potential.
