What is Supported Independent Living?

Supported Independent Living or SIL is a program that allows people with disabilities to live as independent as is reasonable in a group or private residence. SIL is a program that allows participants to have assistance with activities and routines of daily life and yet allows independence. SIL services are tailored to each individual’s needs and can be as basic as assistance with personal care to assistance with maintenance in the home, community integration and social skills.

SIL services are delivered by skilled workers who introduce a blend of assistance with household activities and support with their psychological needs. SIL is used to empower participants by promoting their independence and providing them with skills that allow them to make choices in their lives. SIL is appropriate for those who need support with activities of daily life but would like to remain at their homes or in a community and not be moved to a care residence.

Through SIL, one is given a range of support services that include help with activities of personal care like bathing and showering, grooming and dressing, help with household management activities like cleaning and shopping, and help with social skills development and community activities. The aim is to enable one to live in a homely environment with support that allows one to live as well as one can and with as much independence as one can.

SIL services are adaptive support that is available to each individual’s goals and dreams. Support may be 24/7 for a person or a handful of hours a day. Levels of support can be adjusted as a person becomes more independent or requires more support. SIL is designed to make a person more independent, dignified, and in control.

In addition, SIL services can be complemented with medical transportation support to medical visits or social outings so participants have a chance to socialize and build relationships. For participants with more support needs, our SIL services are tailored to be very individualized so participants are given appropriate supervision, safety, and care without being over-inhibited from being as independent as is appropriate.
