What is Supported Independent Living?
Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a key service in the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) that allows a disabled person to live as independently as possible. SIL provides a mix of support services, each tailored to a person’s needs, and encourages independence with a promise that required assistance will be provided. SIL services are generally provided in a shared living arrangement, with a group of residents with similar support needs living in a single home.
The primary focus of SIL is to enable participants to have a home to live in and support with tasks and activities necessary to live in a home of one’s choice and be supported to do so. SIL services vary based upon what each participant’s individual needs dictate, although generally include support with personal care, household tasks, activities in the community, and more. Providers like ourselves collaborate with participants to create customized support plans to address each participant’s goals, interests, and needs.
SIL promotes independence by creating a balance between support and independence. It enables participants to learn new skills, increase social interactions, and build confidence. It’s not activity assistance with activities of daily living, it’s about giving a sense of mastery in his or her life and making choices according to his or her preferences and objectives.
Through SIL, consumers can be independent and included in the community and be supported to achieve. The services can be from simple care, e.g. bathing and dressing, to integration in community and skill acquisition.
