What is Supported Independent Living?
Supported Independent Living or SIL refers to a National Disability Insurance Scheme service that assists in empowering a disabled person to live in the community to the extent possible. SIL services provide support to those with a disability who require support in activities for daily living, but want to be independent to a very high degree. Domestic assistance, personal care, medications, and acquiring social skills fall under it.
SIL providers are trained to offer customized assistance to individuals, ensuring that the support provided is tailored to each participant’s specific needs. This can range from low-level support for individuals who only need occasional help with daily tasks to 24/7 care for those with more complex needs.
The key to SIL is independence. Through home and community-based individualized support, SIL providers empower a person to live a rich and rewarding life with independence. This includes teaching practical life skills, money and budget management, and support with personal care. SIL also entails creating a safe living environment that promotes social integration, independence, and confidence.
Participants in SIL programs live with another participant in shared accommodations, to a high standard and in a way that enables them to live as close to how they would like to live as possible. SIL services bridge gaps between what a person can do and what they have the potential to do in order to enhance the quality of life.
