What is Supported Independent Living?
Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a support that is offered under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) that allows people with a disability to receive support to live independently in the community. The primary objective of SIL is to enable individuals with a disability to live in their own homes with support that is required to manage day-to-day activities. The support that is offered in SIL is highly varied in nature, varying from a low support to a high support of up to 24/7, depending on individual needs.
The participants in a typical arrangement of SIL live in a shared accommodation or in isolation, and enjoy a team of support staff that is trained to provide support in various aspects of their needs such as personal care, housekeeping, social support, medical checkup, etc. The objective of SIL is not to deliver mere care, but to enable independence, skill development, and social interaction in a manner that is respectful to the participant’s rights and preferences.
SIL is different from other services that are funded under NDIS in that it is a combination of in-home support coupled with support for skill development that allows participants to hold their tenancy in their home and live a productive, active life in a manner that is appropriately supported. The support offered is highly flexible in terms of hours of support and nature of support, ensuring that participants get that support that is required to live a productive life in the community.
