What is Supported Independent Living?
Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a support that allows a person with a disability to live as independent a life as possible. SIL services support a person in their home or in a shared accommodation arrangement to provide a person with support and services that allow a person to live a productive life in a manner that maximizes their independent status.
The objective of SIL is to enable a person to be more independent without compromising their safety, dignity, or welfare.
SIL services are created to cater to each person’s individual needs. Depending on the person’s circumstances, support can be low to high support or even 24/7 support, such as personal care, mobility support, social engagement, house management, and learning new skills. Significantly, SIL is not residential full-time care but is more about enabling a person to live their day-to-day life in their desired manner using the applicable support.
Services under SIL range from support in basic needs such as bathing, showering, and dressing to more complex needs such as mobility support, health care management, or social or emotional support. The support is diverse to cater to the objectives of the individual to enable one to live in their society in their desired manner as autonomously as possible and live a satisfying existence.
SIL services can be provided in a variety of settings such as in independent housing, group living, or rented or owner-occupier housing. The vision is to enable one to live in a desired style of existence in their desired accommodation with support to maintain their health, safety, and wellbeing.
